Chapter Nineteen

Randi went to the kitchen the next morning wearing her robe to find her daughter sitting at the table sipping coffee, a pensive look on her face.

“Morning, sweetheart,” she said on her way to the coffee pot. “Not gabbing with one of your friends, what a surprise.”

“Hey.” Milina looked up at her.

“What’s wrong? Things didn’t go well with the boy you met at the festival last night?”

“No. Things went fine,” she said. “Did you have fun?”

“Yeah.” Randi grinned. She’d had plenty of fun with Brionna. Trying to win that bracelet, she’d felt young again, full of life and energy.

The competition with Mira had only made it more enjoyable. Randi was certain Mira had let her win. Mira had been all state in high school and talent like that didn’t just die with age.

“You didn’t mind her hanging out with you?”

“No,” she said. “Should we have?”

Milina shrugged. “I—it looked like she was flirting with Mirabella.”

“I didn’t notice,” she said as she added cream to her coffee. “You want breakfast?”

“Eggs will be fine,” Milina responded. “It doesn’t bother you that she was flirting with her?”

“Should it?” Hell yes. She’d wanted to slap some sense into Mira and take Brionna over her knee.

The very thought of Mira kissing her, touching her, making Brionna come left her angry. She didn’t want another woman playing with her middle.

Crazy talk, she told herself. Brionna isn’t yours. She’s just on loan.

“She’s pretty,” Milina said.

“She’s an attractive kid,” she agreed as she prepared the pan for eggs. Brionna was a beauty.

“There’s some talk about lesbians and transgender on the campus,” Milina said.

“I know,” Randi replied as she broke eggs into a bowl. “It’s good for you kids to be exposed to different sexual points of view. Not rape mind you, just sexual orientation.”

“Why?”

“So once you leave college you’ll know how to act,” she said. “You won’t have a hard time dealing with them because they’re different.”

“Like act normal?”

“Exactly, they’re people, too,” Randi said. She hoped neither of her daughters were homophobes. It would be a sad thing for her to never be able to tell them she liked women.

“Do you think it’s wrong, dating a woman?”

“From whose perspective?” Randi asked.

“Do you think being gay’s wrong? They say it is in church.”

“I know,” Randi answered. “But no, I don’t think it’s wrong. For all we know being straight could be wrong.”

“I’m not giving up guys,” Milina said with a laugh that turned to a frown.

“What brought this on?” Randi asked curiously.

“Why’d you get your hair cut, and you’re wearing a suit.”

Randi looked down at the blouse left open at the throat and the slacks. The look was more tailored than her usual style and she felt good in it. The shoes were loafers rather than the usual pumps.

“I thought it was time for a change.” And it looked good on her.

“Are you and Mirabella lovers?”

“No.” Randi laughed but she could guess where her daughter’s thoughts were going. Her look was more masculine.

She looked like she wanted to say
